26 Jun 2022
2:00pm - 4:00pm EDT

Join NOVA RPCV on Sunday, June 26th @ 2pm for a tour of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival with Festival curator Jim Deutsch who curated the Peace Corps program at the Festival in 2011. Jim will guide us through this year's Festival starting at the Earth Optimism Program.

To locate the Optimism Program a map of the Festival can be found at https://festival.si.edu/map    Look for us gathered inside the entrance of Earth Optimism.

We will then explore the United Arab Emirates Program. Afterwards we will gather for a happy hour onsite. This tour will be led by NOVA RPCV President Lisa Martin (Estonia 96-98) who also worked on staff of the Folklife Festival in 2001.

James Deutsch is a curator and editor at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in Washington, D.C., where he has helped plan and develop public programs on the Peace Corps, Hungary, China, Circus Arts, Apollo Theater, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Mekong River, U.S. Forest Service, World War II, Silk Road, and White House workers. In addition, he serves as an adjunct professor—teaching courses on American film history and folklore—in the American Studies Department at George Washington University. Deutsch has also taught American Studies classes at universities in Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Norway, Poland, and Turkey.

The Folklife Festival runs June 22-27 and June 30-July 4. In the event of inclement weather, we will meet Sunday, July 3 at 2PM. Check www.novarpcv.org for updates. We hope you can join us!
